What is Melanoma?

According to the National Cancer Institute, Melanoma is defined as a form of cancer that begins in melanocytes (cells that make the pigment melanin). It may begin in a mole (skin melanoma), but can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or in the intestines. The type of melanoma that I will be focusing on is skin melanoma. It is considered the most deadly form of skin cancer, causing malignant tumors to spread throughout the body if not treated early. It can be cured, but in its advanced stages it may be fatal.

Melanoma is not the most common form of skin cancer, but it does cause the most deaths.
